As Midstream Lighting gears up for another Inter airport event, taking place in Munich this week, I’ve been doing some soul searching around our achievements in the aviation industry to date.

It’s been two Inter airport events (or four years, for those not familiar with the event) since we first exhibited. That year, we were the proud winners of Inter airport’s InterRAMP Innovation Award for our Titan product range, a highly efficient LED floodlight designed specifically for high-mast and large area lighting such as airport aprons and we’ve continued to have huge successes ever since.

Our journey to date

Having now completed projects in over 80 international airports across six continents, we continue to be the solution of choice, and our journey to equip the world’s leading airports with Midstream’s technology continues. This includes projects far and wide, including Bangalore International Airport, India, Rome Fiumicino, Italy and Queen Alia Airport in Jordan. However, some of my personal proudest achievements are the complete retrofit of Glasgow International Airport, which we completed in three months, and the supply of our lighting solutions to 14 individual airports in Greece in 2018 – all designed, modified and deployed at the same time, a truly amazing achievement. Now, when you fly to Greece – you’ll be sure to come across a Midstream solution.
I also can’t not mention Gatwick Airport, where over three years we have undertaken a complete airport retrofit. It’s now the first international hub in the world to have a complete LED system on the entire apron.

An industry shift

It’s astonishing to see how the aviation industry has changed over the years – and yet how much is still to come. We’ve moved away from airports being seen as mere stopovers, to travellers viewing them as part of the journey they’re embarking on. There has, therefore, been a huge shift in airports looking to enhance the customer journey whilst on their premises – be it by including a variety of retail and leisure options, upgrading the check in process or simply looking at improving transport links.
This is amplified on a global scale, with the rise of budget airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair opening up cities that were previously inaccessible, to today’s travel-hungry population. Previously small, low footfall airports have since been transformed, welcoming a tenfold rise in passengers and expanding to accommodate such activity.
Looking to the future

The growth we’ve seen in the industry has been spectacular, and I can only imagine that it will continue as airlines expand their flight paths, connecting cities that have never before been connected. These ever-expanding and changing travel demands place constant pressure on airports to accommodate passengers and planes, whilst maintaining or improving operational efficiency. One solution that can be put in place is the addition of new stands to keep aircraft turnaround times to a minimum or retrofitting existing ones.

We look forward to helping airports do so by providing lighting solutions and guidance to enable their expansion and deliver industry growth.
