AKRON, Ohio (Oct. 2024) – Midstream Lighting is proud to announce a successful lighting upgrade at Joseph B. Yost Stadium, Ellet Community Learning Centre, enhancing the experience for athletes, students, and the entire community. This exciting upgrade was demonstrated during a recent lighting show at the stadium, where spectators got a first-hand view of the stadium’s transformed night-time ambience.
Working closely with electrical contractor STG Electric Services and in partnership with Lightspec of Cleveland, Midstream Lighting designed and supplied an innovative LED lighting system that is efficient, sustainable, and cutting-edge. Frank McMillen from STG Electric shared his excitement: “It was thrilling to showcase what this new LED lighting system can do. Partnering with Midstream and Akron City Schools has been a true pleasure, and we are proud to contribute to a brighter future for Akron school athletics.”
The newly installed system, featuring advanced LED floodlights, offers highly customised and easy-to-use controls, allowing for dynamic lighting effects to be set with ease. From spotlighting key moments on the field to creating dramatic lighting displays for special events like senior nights, band performances, and other community activities, this system does far more than simply illuminate the playing field—it elevates the entire spectator experience.
Moreover, the LED lighting has significantly enhanced the quality of live-streamed events, allowing distant friends and family to enjoy games with greater clarity. Improved lighting ensures player numbers and field details are much clearer, bringing loved ones closer to the action.
Commenting on the project, Midstream Lighting’s James McCarty emphasised, “These lights do more than illuminate the field; they enhance once-in-a-lifetime experiences and enrich the memories made at the stadium. We take great pride in delivering projects that meet or exceed the standards set by the IES, ensuring optimum light levels for every type of sport and level of play.”

The upgrade also yields significant sustainability benefits. The previous lighting system—comprising 96 outdated metal halide fixtures—has been replaced by just 46 advanced LED luminaires, delivering an impressive 63% energy savings. This improvement will lead to reduced energy and maintenance costs for the school, according to Adam White, Facilities Manager at Ellet Community Learning Centre.
Joseph B. Yost Stadium serves all ten high schools in the Akron City School District. Its outdated lighting system was over 25 years old and increasingly unreliable. Midstream Lighting’s energy-efficient solution ensures that the stadium now shines brightly, reflecting the dedication and spirit of the Akron community for years to come.
Midstream Lighting, headquartered in Dayton, OH, remains committed to providing innovative lighting solutions for communities and institutions, creating environments where memories are made and cherished.
