St Hugh’s School - Sports Lighting Case Study

Named after Hugh of Avalon, Bishop of Lincoln from 1156 to 1200, St Hugh’s was founded in Bickley, Kent in 1906. In 1945 it moved to its current home at Carswell Manor, a fine Jacobean country house with extensive, attractive grounds in Oxfordshire.
Originally a full boarding school for boys, the school became co-educational in 1977.
Sport plays a very important role in the daily programme for every St Hugh’s pupil. Its timetable allows them to be involved in physical education five to six times a week.

Sports offered by the school include athletics, badminton, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, hockey, lacrosse, netball, rugby, skiing, swimming, and tennis.

The challenge

The school’s multi-use games area had been created without any floodlighting. So, it couldn’t be used in the evenings. Planning permission for floodlighting hadn’t been sought when the area was first built and would need to be gained before any lighting work could go ahead. We were appointed to get that planning permission and to design and install the new sports floodlighting.

The school also wanted the lighting fully installed and operational by the start of the new term in January 2021.

Our Solution

Obtaining planning permission is just one of the many services we offer clients to help make things easier for them so that was no problem for us at all on this project and we managed the process from start to finish. The design solution we proposed that would achieve the required lighting levels across the whole of the area involved constructing eight columns – four on each side. These were then mounted with twelve of our Modus 300 LED luminaires in total, this design meant the individual areas of play such as tennis courts could also be lit in isolation to help save the school money when only one court was in use for example.

‘Patrick led the team from Midstream Lighting who delivered our floodlighting project on time, on budget, and with full planning permission granted for good measure. Exceptional service from the whole company, extremely knowledgeable in their field, and a keen eye for detail. They worked with us to get the best solution for the school, not just the one that was going to reap the biggest profit for the company. We will be working with Midstream in the future.’
