As part of this commitment, we fully comply with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, which has been implemented into UK law.
The WEEE legislation is designed to ensure that producers take responsibility for the collection, treatment, and recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). It also requires suppliers, including both retailers and online providers, to offer customers a free and convenient way to return their waste equipment.
With WEEE volumes growing by approximately 5% each year, this waste stream is now the fastest-growing in the UK. When electrical equipment is sent to landfill, the materials it contains – including lead and other hazardous substances – can leach into the environment, contaminating soil and water. This not only harms natural ecosystems and wildlife but also poses risks to human health.
By contrast, many electrical items can be repaired, reused, or recycled. Recycling helps to preserve valuable natural resources and significantly reduces the environmental and health impacts associated with landfill disposal.
As a responsible manufacturer and distributor, Midstream Lighting is committed to supporting the circular economy by reducing waste and ensuring end-of-life products are handled safely and sustainably.
Under the WEEE Regulations, we offer customers free take-back of waste electrical items on a like-for-like basis when a new product is purchased from us.
For example, if you purchase a new luminaire from Midstream Lighting, we will accept your old unit and ensure it is recycled or disposed of responsibly in line with environmental best practice. Customers must return their WEEE item within 28 days of purchasing their replacement product.
All new electrical products supplied by Midstream Lighting are clearly marked with the symbol shown below, indicating that they should not be disposed of with general waste:
