What comes to mind when you think of sports? I picture sweat, endorphins, a stadium. And of course, as the co-founder of Midstream Lighting, a leading LED lighting business, floodlights also come into the equation.

Whilst not an obvious part of the average person’s day to day sporting experience, lighting has the ability to make or break a game. Think back to the Super Bowl XLVII back in 2013 – not many people remember the final score, or even who was playing, but they can certainly remember the lighting. That’s because the game – one of the world’s most watched sporting events in the year – was halted for 34 minutes after half the lights in the stadium went out.

A less recognised, but equally impactful example of this is the recent Wales v Australia match at the Rugby World Cup in Tokyo, where the last 10 minutes of the match was plunged into darkness, sparking an official investigation.

Lighting of stadia, arenas and multi-purpose venues demand the most intelligent luminaire technologies. When the lights go on, spectators, athletes, sponsors and broadcasters expect total performance – the business criticality of lighting in sports cannot be underestimated.

At Midstream Lighting, we’re no strangers to business-critical lighting. As experts in the aviation and ports lighting industries, where lighting is first and foremost fundamental to passenger and crew safety, we have extensive experience in ensuring lighting solutions are dynamic, dependable and precise. We’ve worked with airports big and small across the world, including Bangalore International Airport, India, Rome Fiumicino, Italy and Queen Alia Airport in Jordan – and even completed the complete retrofit of Glasgow International Airport in just three months.

We’re now taking this experience – earned over 10+ years in the industry – and applying it to the exciting world of sports. We’ve already worked with professional football clubs, grassroots sports facilities and sports venues across the globe, and have lots of exciting projects in the pipeline. Our bespoke low-cost yet high-definition solutions are the perfect match (no pun intended!) for the technically challenging and complex requirements of professional sports lighting – and we can’t wait to tell you all about it.

We’ll be exhibiting at FSB Cologne this week and would love to have a chat. Join us at stand 12, Hall 10, Aisle G on Level 2 to meet my partner Yuli and I and to explore how we can help you.
