FOOTBALL LIGHTING CASE STUDY

Arbroath F.C. - Scottish Championship Lighting Case Study

Formed in July 1878, Arbroath F.C. is a semi-professional football club that currently plays in the Scottish Championship. “The Lichties”, nicknamed after the lights that would guide fishing boats back to the local harbour, hold the world record for the biggest victory in senior football – a 36-0 win dating back to 1885.

A unique solution for a unique stadium

While every football supporter will tell you that their home ground is a special place, Arbroath F.C.’s Gayfield Park is truly one of a kind. Situated just yards from Scotland’s east coast, the open stand stadium is buffeted by strong winds that roll in constantly from the neighbouring North Sea. Those conditions, in tandem with ageing mast infrastructure dating back to the ‘60s, meant that the club had a lot of questions about the future of its lighting system.

With Gayfield’s existing setup delivering lighting levels far below those required for Scottish Championship play – just 430 lux against a minimum of 500 – the club was eager to implement a significant upgrade. At the same time, Arbroath was reluctant to move forward without first understanding whether its existing masts could be used, or if an entirely new installation would be needed. That’s where Midstream’s expertise came into play.

Products and services provided:

  • Design and installation of a retrofit LED floodlighting system to meet Scottish Championship lighting levels.
  • In-depth consultancy on existing mast infrastructure.
  • Manufacture and supply of 42 low weight and low windage Modus S1100 Series luminaires.

Key achievements:

  • An upgraded system suitable for the Scottish Championship and beyond.
  • Annual cost savings in excess of £6,000 on power consumption alone.
  • Rapid turnaround, completed in the midst of the 21/22 season.
  • Energy reductions of 50%.

Expert guidance delivers significant savings

Conscious of the fact that new masts can easily add 75% or more to the cost of a new lighting system, Midstream brought in a specialist structural engineering team to carry out a series of load tests on the existing infrastructure. Reassured that the near 60 year-old pylons could support new luminaires, particularly those with a lighter and more compact design like Midstream’s, the Arbroath board gave the go ahead.

With assistance from installer JHP Electrical, 42 of Midstream’s Modus S1100 luminaires were positioned around the ground. Purpose-built to deliver optimum performance even in harsh conditions like those at Gayfield, the new luminaires delivered an immediate boost to 550 lux. Now, not only is the Lichties’ ground well-lit enough for life in the Championship, the increase in lighting levels means that the club is prepared for Scottish Premiership-tier matches too.

Delivered in just eight working days the new system is a cost-efficient, high quality solution for a truly unique venue – one that is set to save the Lichties thousands of pounds every year on energy costs alone.

“From the very start of the process, the team at Midstream guided us professionally and carefully through the design and installation options, allowing us to have full confidence in the best lighting system to use.”

Mike Caird, Chairman – Arbroath F.C.
