Learning beyond lesson time
Rugby is clearly an important part of daily life at Whitgift School. The South Croydon boys’ school runs 28 different rugby teams, and 10 Old Whitgiftians currently play in the top flight of the English game. With such enthusiasm for the sport on show, Whitgift was naturally keen to ensure that training and play could take place whenever needed – even outside of daylight hours.
For that to be the case, however, the school required a fundamental upgrade to its existing sports pitches. Its outdoor rugby pitch was completely unlit, requiring everything from masts and power connections to be installed before any floodlights could be fitted. In addition to the usual complexities involved in that kind of project, the presence of nearby public woodlands also presented an additional, planning-related challenge to overcome.
Products and services provided:
- Manufacture and supply of 14 Modus S1100 luminaires.
- Full design and civil engineering services, alongside provision of six masts.
- Commissioning and testing of the completed system.
Key achievements:
- Delivered a 200 lux, club-standard rugby lighting system.
- Helped the school navigate stringent planning stipulations.
- Full, “turnkey” solution covering design, installation, groundworks, and commissioning.
Full support at every step of the journey
To help it tackle those issues – and in the wake of a competitive tender – Whitgift appointed Midstream Lighting to design, manufacture, and install a brand new floodlighting system for its rugby pitch. Without existing infrastructure to work from, this required Midstream to handle the groundworks, electrical installation, and commissioning, in addition to providing the masts, luminaires, and controls within the system itself.
At the core of that design were 14 of Midstream’s Modus S1100 floodlights, lightweight LEDs designed from the ground up to meet the unique demands of sports like rugby. As well as providing the school with an energy-efficient lighting solution, the S1100’s inbuilt light shields – and Midstream’s expertise when liaising with planning and ecology officials – also helped it to navigate those rigorous planning restrictions.
“We wanted to maximise use of our main hybrid pitch through installation of sports floodlighting. After a competitive tender process we appointed Midstream who have delivered a first class installation. The benefit has been profound allowing us to achieve many more hours of play than before.”
